Interview with Matt Walsh
Interview with Matthew Walsh, our worship leader:
What do you do at Saalem?
I primarily serve as the worship leader/music director on the English side, which includes both practical and spiritual responsibilities such as leading worship in our Thursday, Friday, and Sunday services, organizing practices, overseeing the tech equipment, development of musicians/singers/worship leaders, pastoring the worship community of Saalem Church.
What is your goal as a worship leader?
For the worship department, my goal is to see a team of authentic worshipers with a passion for Jesus and His presence function with excellence, both personally and in their instrument, in the annointing. For Saalem Church, my desire is to see the presence of the Lord in this church like never before. To see a people hungry for an encounter with Jesus through worship, bringing life change. To see a church that is united in worship, experiencing the reality of “where two or three are gathered”, bringing glory to His name, lifting up one voice to their creator and experiencing his presence and goodness not because of what they “get” from worshiping, but to gather around his throne for who He is because He is worthy. And not only on Sunday morning, but to engage in a life-style of worship, where in every season of life, they worship.
What are your best experiences in worship like?
To worship is complete joy for me, both alone and corporately. The best experiences for me in worship is where I know that Jesus is in the house, that you can physically feel that He is near. And the results are amazing. Worship songs begin to sing themselves, people are engaged and lifting up the name of Jesus. It’s in those times when there is an “open Heaven”, experiencing “Heaven on earth” that I, as a leader, am not really leading any more. I let God be God. He orchestrates, I just need to be sensitive to how He’s moving, to step back and wait for Him to move. Those are the best times.
What are you believing God for regarding the future of worship at Saalem?
Most importantly, I believe we will see greater measures of God’s presence that we’ve not yet seen. I believe for a church that loves worship, to minister to Him alone. And as we lift up His name, we will see God move like never before, in Saalem church and Thunder Bay. I also believe for multiple worship teams ministering both in church and outside the church, taking what we experience at Saalem to other churches and places. God has given to me again the desire to write songs that come from Saalem church, I believe God will use those as well, wherever he wants them to be sung.
