Matt Walsh is a Graduate of Music from Lakehead University. He serves as lead worshiper at Saalem Church.
What do you do at Saalem?
I primarily serve as the Lead Worshiper/Music Director on the English side, which includes leading worship on a regular basis in our Thursday, Friday, and Sunday services, organizing practices, development of musicians/singers/worship leaders, and pastoring the worship community of Saalem Church.
What is your goal as a worship leader?
My desire is for Saalem Church to encounter the presence of the Lord like never before- to see a people hungry for an encounter with Jesus through worship, bringing life change from the inside out. To see a church united in worship, experiencing the reality of “where two or three are gathered.” And not only in worship services, but to engage in a 24/7 life-style of worship that is focused on His presence.
What are your best experiences in worship like?
To worship is complete joy for me, both alone and corporately. The best experiences for me in worship is where I know that Jesus is in the house, that you can physically feel that He is near. And the results are amazing. Worship songs begin to sing themselves, people are engaged and lifting up the name of Jesus. It’s in those times when there is an “open Heaven”, experiencing “Heaven on earth” that I, as a leader, am not really leading any more. I let God be God. He orchestrates, I just need to be sensitive to how He’s moving, to step back and wait for Him to move. Those are the best times.
What are you believing God for regarding the future of worship at Saalem?
Most importantly, I believe we will see greater measures of God’s presence that we’ve not yet seen. I believe for a church that loves worship, to minister to Him alone. And as we lift up His name, we will see God move like never before, in Saalem church and Thunder Bay. I also believe for worship teams ministering both in church and outside the church, taking what we experience at Saalem to other churches and places. Songwriting is becoming an important part of Saalem worship. In writing songs that come from this house, God will use them to take the worship that happens here to new levels.
