Baptism of the Holy Spirit

Big Idea: The Holy Spirit is not merely a force or feeling but the Person and presence of God living within believers. Jesus promised the Holy Spirit not only to dwell in us but to empower us. Through prayer, surrender, and hunger for God, believers can experience a deeper fellowship and a fresh infilling of the Holy Spirit to live boldly and to fulfill God's purpose.

Summary

The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity, not a mystical power, but God Himself dwelling with us and in us. Scripture shows that the Holy Spirit has a mind, will, emotions, teaches, comforts, and guides believers.

Jesus promised the Holy Spirit as the Father's gift and covenant promise (John 14:16–17). While every believer receives the Holy Spirit at salvation, the baptism or filling of the Holy Spirit is described as a deeper immersion into God's presence and power. Jesus instructed His disciples to wait in Jerusalem because they needed power before being sent out.

Acts 1:8 reveals that the purpose of this power is not personal glory but to become effective witnesses for Christ. The Holy Spirit empowers believers to overcome sin, break chains, walk in obedience, and fulfill God’s mission.

The disciples responded to God's promise through obedience, unity, and constant prayer. Before Pentecost came, there was surrender and waiting. When they gathered in one accord, God fulfilled His promise, and all were filled.

The Holy Spirit still desires to empower people today. God is not looking for perfect people but surrendered people. The invitation remains open: hunger for more, surrender control, ask in faith, and receive.
