The Delights of The Spirit-Filled Life
Key Scripture: Romans 8:14–17
Big Idea: The Spirit-filled life is more than being forgiven or rescued from sin. Through Christ, we have been adopted into God's family, given intimate access to the Father, assured that we belong to Him, and made heirs with Christ. We no longer have to live like slaves controlled by fear, guilt, or our old identity. We can live as beloved children of God.
Summary
1. Adoption: You belong to God's family
Paul says those who are led by the Spirit are children of God. Being led by the Spirit does not earn our place in God's family. It is evidence that we already belong to Him.
As the Holy Spirit works in us, a family resemblance begins to appear through a new direction, new character, and a changed relationship with sin. When we belong to the family, we increasingly begin to look like our Father.
2. Freedom: Stop living like a slave
Romans 8:15 says: “The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again.”
Through Christ, our debt has been paid. We do not serve God hoping He will eventually love us. We serve Him because He has already loved us.
Many Christians are children of God but still think like spiritual orphans, controlled by guilt, shame, and the need to earn God's approval.
The Holy Spirit reminds us: You are not a slave. You are a child.
3. Intimacy: You can cry “Abba, Father”
The Spirit allows us to approach Almighty God as Abba, Father, combining reverence with incredible intimacy.
Because of Jesus, we can bring God our questions, fears, pain, failures, confusion, joy, and needs.
We do not need impressive religious language. Through Christ, you have access to your Father, and you can come honestly and confidently into His presence.
4. Assurance: The Spirit reminds us of who we are
Romans 8:16 says: “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.”
Our assurance is not simply based on emotions. Feelings change, but the Spirit gives evidence of His presence through conviction, hunger for God, love for His people, and transformation.
When guilt says, “Look at your failures,” the Gospel reminds us to look at what Jesus has accomplished. Our confidence rests in God's promises and the Spirit's work within us.
5. Inheritance: You are an heir with Christ
Paul says that if we are children, we are also heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ.
We have not simply been rescued from something. We have been brought into something. Our greatest inheritance is not what God can give us. Our greatest treasure is God Himself. Earthly possessions disappear, but our inheritance in Christ is eternal.
We are not begging for crumbs outside the Father's house. We have been given a place at His table.
6. Suffering: Groaning here, glory there
Being God's child does not mean we will avoid suffering.
Romans 8:18 says: “Our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.”
Suffering does not mean God has abandoned us. Our present pain is temporary, but our inheritance is eternal. For the believer, suffering does not get the final word; the best is still to come.
7. Walking in the Spirit-filled life
Every believer has the Holy Spirit, but Scripture also calls us to continually be filled with the Spirit, allowing Him to lead and influence every area of life.
Recognize: The Holy Spirit already lives within every true believer.
Confess: Repent of anything grieving the Holy Spirit.
Surrender: Give Him control of your choices, relationships, words, attitudes, and desires.
Ask: Trust that the Father delights to fill His children with His Spirit.
The question is not simply: “Do I have the Holy Spirit?”
We should also ask: “Does the Holy Spirit have every part of me?”
